Do everything you possibly can to meet the candidate and take their measure in person. Stop making voter decisions based on TV ads!! Do your homework. Reclaim America.”

I respond with the following:

To anyone who wants to meet Ruth, she does not yet have a campaign office per say.... well actually, she has at least 9 of them but they are at kitchen tables, or in home offices, or in living rooms, spread out across all 6 counties in CD7. These offices are staffed by trusted volunteers who have committed their time, energy, homes, and lives to helping take back our country.

The way these trusted volunteers have chosen to do this is by volunteering for Ruth's campaign and by allowing their name and contact information to be posted in her mailings (which for many of us, that's huge) and by allowing anyone who wants to, to drop by their homes and pick up signs, literature, and bumperstickers to help Ruth's campaign with it's goal of sending Grijalva packing.

You see, early on, Ruth's campaign had to make a choice, use the hard earned money, generously given by her grassroots supporters for office space or use it to purchase as many items as possible to get the word about her campaign and her cause... retiring Grijalva! Ruth chose the later, as she believed it was the wisest use of your donations and that seems to be proving a very wise choice indeed. Her message is getting out! Grijalva has taken notice! He doesn't like Ruth's bumperstickers (she's given out over 6000), he doesn't like her billboards (she has 10 in Yuma), and he doesn't like the fact that she might actually accomplish her goal (taking over his job)! Ruth is making a difference and she gives her supporters all the credit. As she puts it, without my grassroots supporters, my campaign would be nothing!

So yes, as Lesley suggest, don't just base your opinions on radio & TV ads, believe me, they are not always what they seem!!!! Go, meet the candidates, ask them questions, visit & read their website postings, if you like them, volunteer to help, make a donation, whatever it is that you are comfortable with, DO IT, before it's too late!

The following was done by the Tucson Tea Party, and arrived via e-mail today. Since our papers are largely ignoring everyone running in CD-7 except for Raul, please take a look:

In an effort to help get TTP members to understand the candidates running in many of the races locally and statewide we have requested that candidates in specific races reply to a few questions that we thought would be of interest to tea partiers. Many of you may already be familiar with the candidates, but hope that the following will help you with your primary voting.

We would like to remind everyone that TTP does not endorse candidates, but once the primaries are over we will be an active participant in the November elections.

The first candidates to answer questions are from the Congressional District 7 race against Raul Grijalva. They were each given the same questions and amount of time in which to answer the questions. Candidates responses are listed in alphabetical order by their last name.

Candidate Questions and Answers

Question #1 - What are your thoughts on SB1070, especially as how it relates to National immigration policy?

Ruth McClung- There is a big difference between legal immigration and illegal immigration. I support legal immigration. SB1070 was Arizona’s way to try to help with the ramifications of illegal immigration. Immigration and border security are the federal government’s job, but it has not been doing its duty. Arizona had every right to pass a bill that pushes for federal law to be enforced, though this is not an excuse for the federal government for not doing its job.

Joseph Sweeney- I fully support we should have done it 14yrs ago. The Congress amended the Immigration and Naturalization Act in 1995. The Congressional intent was to co-operate with state police powers to help enforce the act. SB1070 does this. The administration has abolished its duty to take care to faithfully execute our laws pursuant to the U.S. Constitution Article II section 3.

Robert Wilson- I believe SB1070 was written to combat not only illegal aliens but also safe-haven laws. Arizona has a serious problem with criminal activity that starts with illegal entry into the United States of America. SB1070 helped open the eyes of the politicks in Washington and people around the world to the plight of Arizona; chiefly the safety of the residents of the state. I have outlined on my website a solution to our immigration problems that does not involve "Amnesty" and decries the "Dream Act". I am offering a simple solution to the problem.

Question #2 - As a freshman in Congress, what would be your approach in shrinking the size of government and cutting government spending?

Ruth McClung- I personally like the idea of zero based budgeting. This can be extremely time consuming so performing it every 5 to 10 years would be a reasonable approach. Periodically doing this would help clean out much of the wasteful spending because each expenditure would need to be specifically added to the budget with a reasonable explanation as to why it was better than some other expenditure.

Cutting government spending and balancing the budget would have a substantial impact on shrinking the size of government. We also need to clean out our government bureaucracy - this will shrink government influence. Regulations and mandates from our bureaucracy can slow down our economy and businesses, and can take away liberty. Some regulations and mandates are needed, but we need to get rid of the ones that are not! I have also found that there is selective enforcement of these laws and regulations, which leaves the ethical person or group at a disadvantage and is destroying justice and liberty in our country.

Joseph Sweeney- We need to evaluate the constituents opinions on these issues. I know from some data research they expect representation that is balanced and fair. They expect more representation than what their getting.

Robert Wilson- This has so many parts to it, but in no particular order. A - work with Paul Ryan to get the "Roadmap for America" passed. B - Repeal "ObamaCare". D - Legislate a "Balanced Budget" requirement every 2 Fiscal Years. E - Cut all discretionary spending unless within the balanced budget this includes any budget item that is not included in mandated expenses ie: Dept of Education, Dept of Housing, Dept of Interior, etc.

Question #3 – What are your feelings about the recently passed Health Care Legislation? Would you support repeal?

Ruth McClung- Yes, I would support repealing the Health Care Legislation. The Health Care bill was so bad that they had to bribe people to vote for it. We can look at countries around the world, or the State of Massachusetts, to understand how damaging this law will be to America’s future health care if we do not repeal the bill.

Unless President Obama sees the light, our first line of attack on the bill should be to de-fund it. In 2012, we need to elect a better president who will help us fully repeal it.

Joseph Sweeney- Needed for Cost(s) reasons. No; but we to amend it to keep it balanced and fair.

Robert Wilson- The so called "Obamacare" legislation constitutes a tax on all citizens. I want to repeal it and have signed the Repeal It! pledge. I have also outlined on my website a solution to bringing down the cost of Health Care. Remember Health Insurance is NOT Health Care!

Question #4 – In your own words, explain the Tea Party movement locally and nationwide.

Ruth McClung- I believe the Tea Party movement consists of local groups of people who gather together because they love America. They wish to see a return to the values that our country was founded on - especially limited government, individual freedom and personal responsibility. Our government was set up to be constrained under the Constitution, but it isn’t any more. The Tea Party movement realizes this and is standing against this trend. They seem to always gather in a peaceful and respectful manner, celebrating their first amendment rights. They are a positive political force in Arizona as well as nationwide.

Joseph Sweeney- I believe that it is necessary to wake up our public officials on both the local and national levels. We are again sadden by taxation without representation especially on major issues. I intend to represent citizens/taxpayers 80% on major issues not 20%. I intend to do my homework and evaluate. I will follow the spirit of 1776 and the Declaration of Independence which states that just governments get their powers from the consent of the governed. Sometimes this consent needs to be researched at the state, local and national levels.

Robert Wilson- I believe the Tea Party movement is one of the great inventions that could only occur in the United States of America. Only in the USA can we have people with the most conservative principles and people with the most liberal principles standing together peacefully against the government for redress. The Tea Party movement stands for everyday people coming together to be heard with one voice that government spending, rising taxes, and mandates to the people will not be tolerated. The Tea Party is a display of the freedoms of this country in an effort to have elected representatives listen to the voice of the people. The Tea Party embodies what is right in this country fighting what is considered wrong; it is individuals from all walks of life versus political class.

One Step Closer to Socialism - Financial Reform Law?!

With everything that our country has been facing for the past several years, we now have another problem to deal with, the Dodd-Frank Financial Reform Law. This is another government bureaucracy weight to add to the shackles that our federal government has placed on small business. With its 2,300 pages, it has become a job "creator" for the lobbyists and lawyers who will go to Washington to interpret it, but for the rest of us, it will make lending and borrowing more expensive and destroy jobs. Small companies will collapse under the new government burdens and regulations. We cannot afford this bill. It is a blatant attack on small business and "Main Street".

This bill will decrease the predictability needed to jump start the economy. I discussed how predictability was needed in an earlier op-ed, http://www.ruth4az.com/Issues/EconomyCanBeStrongAgain.html . With small business being held to the same regulations as large business, and without the ability to hire a fleet of lawyers and lobbyists, they will have little say in where this monstrosity takes them. They will also struggle to stay compliant with the strict regulations that will be placed upon them.

Dodd and Frank are arguably the two politicians who carry the most blame for the housing crisis. Why do we trust them to "fix any problem? This bill will do nothing to address the problems that created the recession that we are currently in. Wall Street and large financial firms (otherwise known as the "Too Big to Fail" companies) will find numerous loopholes in the bastion of non committal regulation that is this 2,300 page bill. It is small town America who will suffer!

A vote for me is a vote to shrink government.

Lets flood Congressional district 7 with Ruth McClung signs!
Ruth signs are going up all over CD 7 thanks to many people! Many of the signs in Maricopa County had disappeared so our volunteers led by Barb got them back up. The ones in the city of Maricopa will go up this weekend. We still have plenty of signs to put up. Let Juanita know if you want to decorate your area with a McClung sign or 2. We have 18" by 24" , "4 by 3" and 4ft by 8ft signs.

IMPORTANT FOR PRIMARY! We need volunteers who are willing to put out signs at their voting precinct, the night before the primary election. Let us know if you are willing. We will start a list and closer to August 24 get a sign or 2 to you! Some people go to vote still undecided as to who to vote for. Lets convince them to vote for a rocket scientist!

I'm asking for your help to get a friend of mine, Craig Smith, on the August primary election ballot. He wants to compete to be the Republican nominee for Arizona Senate for LD25. He needs about 500 signatures from around the district (Legislative District 25 includes Marana) to achieve that. Republicans, Independents and persons registered "Party Not Designated" may sign his nominating petition.

If successful in August (against other Republicans) he will compete in November for the Arizona Senate seat now held by Democrat Manny Alvarez.

Your signature on Craig Smith's nominating petition doesn't commit you to support him when you vote in August, or in the November general election (though certainly we hope that you will).

It simply helps to insure that Craig gets on the ballot and that we all have more choices when election time comes.

Craig Smith is not your ordinary Republican, nor an ordinary politician. He's not a young "city-slicker" looking for a career in politics. He's a retired U.S. Army Master Sargent with a Masters Degree in Public Administration.

Craig is genuine, honest and reasonable. Born in Nogales, AZ, he's a gringo that speaks Spanish. He's the former Director of Community Development in Bisbee. He's been married 41 years and currently serves on the Huachuca City town council.

Craig is a libertarian-Republican. A true believer in smaller government, lower taxes and more freedom. He believes in the rule of law, not personal whims, but he's aware that laws are sometimes poorly crafted and unevenly applied.

When Craig Smith takes the Oath of Office swearing to uphold the Constitutions of both the United States and Arizona he means it.

Ruth McClung, Republican Congressional candidate, is officially on the ballot

Ruth McClung, Republican Congressional candidate in Arizona's 7th district, filed her petitions on Monday, April 26. Ruth's signature count was 1358 which gives her more than 3 times the number needed to be placed on the primary ballot on August 24, 2010. There are still some signatures out so she will do an addendum to her filing, later on in May. Ruth has been officially running since June, 2009.

After collecting signatures since July, 2009 it was a good feeling to have that important step of the campaign finished. I am so grateful to a number of you for collecting signatures for me! I could not have gotten this many without your help! Guess who is taking the picture? It was a bipartisan act! Ruth

In a story posted at the Tucson Weekly, Supervisor Ray Carroll becomes the focus of the left as, once again, the Republican does "transparency in government" better than the left.

Supervisor Carroll has been asking for months for more detail into the budget situation of Pima County in order to get a handle on the 1.2 BILLION dollar debt the county currently owns. Those requests have essentially fallen on deaf ears. In addition, the 3 Democrat Supervisors refuse to seed the 6th person necessary for the citizen's budget revue committee to hold a quorum and begin looking into the county's financial paperwork.

What was Huckleberry's response? "It's not how much the debt is. It's how you manage it." In other words...as long as we bounce it around and pass it off to the next administration, we don't need to worry about it now. Apparently 'Transparency' is only acceptable when viewed through a frosted glass of Huckleberry whine.

How dare we try to be fiscally sound.

Supervisor Carroll needs our support, before any further "creative accounting" destroys Pima County.

President Obama signed the Senate version of Obamacare into law today, effectively turning our entire health system into a socialistic system of healthcare coverage. Most of us are still stunned, appalled that the Land of the Free has now become the Land of the Free-Until-You're-Hurt.

How did we get here?

There are many reasons why...but ultimately it comes down to the voters. The voters elected the people that are now in office, making the exact decisions they said they would make. We can argue and complain and moan about the current state of affairs...

OR...

We can do something about it.

We do not have time to sit back and cry foul - if you think this is the end for this cycle, think again. This Federal Government of ours must be held accountable on a daily basis until NOvember, and there MUST be changes made in all levels of government. This change will only come from those same voters - the ones that sit in that independent middle, and the ones that chose to not vote.

Now is the time to decide what YOU will do to reach those voters:

Can you make 5 phone calls a night for a candidate?
Can you walk your neighborhood and hand out cards with the phone number and website address of Pima GOP HQ or the candidate of your choice?
Can you hang fliers on public bulletin boards?
Start or join a club?
Donate some money to a candidate or a Party?
Write a letter to the editor?
Comment on the online comment section of the paper?
Spend time on social networking sites adding commentary to politicians pages?
Hold a fundraiser?

And not just one time, either. This needs to be a daily occurrence. It's about re-educating an entire segment of society on the dangers of the Progressive movement, and it's slow destruction of the free market and liberty.

Make the decision TODAY to not let one more day go by without putting up a fight. (non-violent, of course)

Make the decision TODAY to not hand this great country of ours over to the Moochers.

Make the decision TODAY to be personally involved, and not to rely on others to fight for you.

Make the decision TODAY, because I know that the Progressives' and the Left have made their decision to fight years ago, and they have not given up.

President Obama, Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi are preparing to cram their healthcare bill down America's throat by March 26. They are doing this because Congress goes on recess at this time for a few weeks, and they want to have the vote as soon as possible in order to avoid a repeat of the August town hall protests that derailed their plans.

The worst thing about this bill? It forces you to get health insurance you don't want, and if you don't buy it you get a fine, and if you don't pay the fine you go to jail.

That sounds a lot like government tyranny to me.

This is an urgent matter. The time to act is now! We have to put a stop to this bill once and for all. The President and Congress are trying to ram this bill down the throats of the American people to save face no matter how abominable it is.

Where is Gabrielle Giffords hiding? Why hasn't she explained to the people why this different bill is so good and why she's voting for it? Why is she so scared of the people of Tucson?

She is about to sell out the people of her district and doesn't even have the guts to face them.

Bring your "Where's Gabby?" and other health care signs, and wear your red tea shirts! It's time to bring our Congresswoman out of hiding. We hope to see all of you there.

Rep. Stevens on the State Tax Increase.

The SALES TAX REFERRAL (Senate Bill 1001), which passed the House on Feb. 4, will put the decision of whether to enact a one-cent sales tax to the voters in a special election slated for May 18.

This was the third vote on the issue in less than a year, and I strongly believe that time would have been better spent working toward balancing the budget. The first attempt last May was a stand-alone measure that failed with not one Democrat voting in favor of sending it to the ballot. In August, the sales tax referral was bundled with what was a very pro-business and pro-growth package. It passed in the House and failed in the Senate by one vote, again without any Democratic support.

Without the ballot referral, the Governor used her line item veto authority on most of the budget provisions passed by both Legislative bodies. This veto threw the state into an unbalanced budget for FY 2010 and was followed with three more special sessions to further reduce spending. Not being able to negotiate around this referral has made a terrible situation even worse as we are not able to balance the budget due to an uncertainty of a revenue source and amount in regards to the referral.

It is my opinion that we, the state of Arizona, must have our say on this matter. It will not go away without the final word from the voters. It has been debated on if we, the Legislature, should have a straight up or down vote for the sales tax increase. That vote would fail on the floor of the House and I would vote NO on that bill. A sales tax increase would lose at least 15,000 jobs with a possibility of nearly 60,000 people needing additional support from the state. That scenario would be disastrous to our economy and would likely prolong the recession for many more years to come.

Now it's time to get the final word from Arizona voters on the sales tax increase. I strongly believe this is the best way to move forward with an issue as weighty as a tax increase.

Sen. Manny Alvarez (D-25) and Representative Pat Fleming (D-25) have voted NO three times stating they would not support a ballot referral. Indeed, Rep. Fleming indicated she would prefer having a straight up-or-down vote on the Floor.

Arizona has a very robust voter initiative process and voters know what is at stake with this referral. It's disappointing that Sen. Alvarez and Rep. Fleming have wasted months on the discussion instead of simply acting to let their constituents decide how they'd like to move forward.

If the referral passes, all of the tax revenue will be placed in the General Fund and the Legislature will then decide where to appropriate all of the new tax revenue.

Our Freshman State Representative David Stevens scored a 74 for his first time on the list - this puts him in the "Friend of the Taxpayer" category.

No surprise, however, that State Representative Patricia Fleming (D) scored a whopping 16 - two worse than the Obamacare-touting Rep. Sinema. State Senator Manny Alvarez (D) was 4th WORST on the list with a score of 10.

Both Rep. Fleming and Sen. Alvarez earned the title "Champion of Big Government".

AFP-Arizona graded dozens of tax, budget, and regulatory bills from the 2009 regular session, as well as bills from five special sessions, giving weight to bills according to their projected dollar impact to taxpayers, consumers, and producers in Arizona.

According to AFP-Arizona, taxpayer victories during the last year included approximately $1.5 billion in baseline spending cuts to the FY2009 and FY2010 budgets, passage of a bill that allows for private enterprise to provide for Arizona’s transportation infrastructure, and referral of the Arizona Health Care Freedom Act and the Save Our Secret Ballot proposition to the November 2, 2010 ballot. But the 2009 sessions also produced disappointments for taxpayers, including the collective failure of the Governor and Legislature to implement measures that would balance the state’s long-term structural budget deficit in the near future.

AFP-Arizona was especially disappointed by the narrow failure in the Senate of a referendum bill to reduce the level of spending allowed by the state’s existing constitutional spending limit. The problem with the existing limit is that it was too high to prevent the kind of over-spending we saw during the Napolitano years. More than any other bill on the scorecard, the spending limit referendum bill (SCR1006) was crucial in dividing “Champions of the Taxpayer” from legislators with lesser designations. This deficit crisis was caused by the state government’s out-of-control spending, but the Legislature and Governor have failed to address that problem.

Other disappointments included the failure to advance a bill that would allow Arizona health insurance consumers to purchase plans available in other states. By not moving that bill forward, the Legislature has allowed Arizona insurance consumers to remain captive to the local fiefdoms of big insurance companies. Further, they failed to provide a competitive alternative to the federal takeover of the health insurance marketplace proposed by Obama, Pelosi and Reid. Yet another disappointment for AFP-Arizona was Gov. Brewer’s veto of a bill to extend fiscal transparency to the county and city levels.

The scorecard’s top award, and the designation of “Hero of the Taxpayer,” went to longtime taxpayer champion Russell Pearce (R-Mesa). Also reaching the status of “Hero” were Senators Sylvia Allen (R-Eastern Counties) and Chuck Gray (R-Mesa).

Sen. Meg Burton Cahill (D-17) found herself at the bottom of the list, with the designation of “Hero of Big Government.”

Governor Jan Brewer earned a score of 43 percent on the scorecard, earning the designation of “Friend of Big Government.”

To her credit, and unlike her predecessor, Gov. Brewer has looked realistically at the magnitude of the deficit. Where we differ is in our approach to digging our way out of the deficit. Brewer was monomaniacal in pushing a job-killing billion-dollar tax hike, and she held much-needed budget reductions hostage to that vision. She also demonstrated a lack of imagination when it came to streamlining government and unloading unproductive state assets.

The Sonoran Alliance wrote a great piece in response to the win by Scott Brown in Massachusetts. I'll quote a piece of it here:

Democrats in supposedly “safe” districts should now take heed as insurgent-backed conservative candidates like Ruth McClung and Janet Contreras wage ground-level campaigns against incumbents, ultra-liberal Raul Grijalva, and deeply submerged, Ed Pastor. The best and most tangible consequence of the Massachusetts miracle would be for both these women to receive the full-fledged support of tea party activists and anyone intolerable of the status quo.

So far, Mrs. McClung has received some pretty good support from the Tucson Tea Party. It also appears that she is picking up some support by the Pima GOP HQ as well...What remains to be seen is will she pick up the active support of those within LD25 and CD7 to get her name out to as many as possible before Nov.? Time to lace up the shoes and hit the streets!

Ruth McClung wants to thank all of you for your hard work in opposing the Health Care Reform bills currently going through Congress. We are being heard! The Senate Finance Committee has dropped the so called Death Panel language from its version of the bill:

Sen. Chuck Grassley, ranking member of the Committee on Finance, today made the following comment on end-of-life concerns and other concerns prompted by the House committee-passed health care legislation.

"The bill passed by the House committees is so poorly cobbled together that it will have all kinds of unintended consequences, including making taxpayers fund health care subsidies for illegal immigrants. On the end-of-life issue, there's a big difference between a simple educational campaign, as some advocates want, and the way the House committee-passed bill pays physicians to advise patients about end of life care and rates physician quality of care based on the creation of and adherence to orders for end-of-life care, while at the same time creating a government-run program that is likely to lead to the rationing of care for everyone. On the Finance Committee, we are working very hard to avoid unintended consequences by methodically working through the complexities of all of these issues and policy options. That methodical approach continues. We dropped end-of-life provisions from consideration entirely because of the way they could be misinterpreted and implemented incorrectly. Maybe others can defend a bill like the Pelosi bill that leaves major issues open to interpretation, but I can't."

There are however about 7 versions of the Bill going through both Houses of Congress, and this is only one version. And this is only one issue. Keep up fighting for our rights.

By the way, Rep. Grijalva says he will not vote for the bill unless it contains a strong inclusion of public option. extremist organization whose mission is to promote the far-right wing's
agenda and to support candidates who have fallen tragically out of touch
with the values of mainstream Arizonans."

Then, on August 6, Giffords hosted a movie night at La Placita Cinema
downtown in which she was supposed to make an appearance. 200 - 300
concerned citizens

showed up to let her know that they wanted a public townhall in which to
voice their concerns given that she had scheduled none during the recess.

Giffords did not show up to her own event, saying that she had never

exposing that she was, in fact, scheduled to attend the event and was
simply hiding from her constituents.

Now, our Representative has raised the stakes to a new, terrible height.

In an interview with Daniel Scarpinato of the Arizona Daily Star, she said
things about all of us that will make you cringe.

She said that we are using MANIPULATION and RACISM to mislead people! She
also said that shewas threatened by a protester with a gun while down in
Douglas and that she feels worried for her life! (Of course, this
revelation was only made to Mr. Scarpinato, as I didn't see that covered in
any newspaper nor was anyone put in jail for this supposed threat of
violence).

Does your Representative, Gabrielle Giffords, truly believe that her
constituents are racists because they oppose the government's takeover of
the economy? Does she truly believe that we are an unruly mob of racists
that want to end her life? Don't take my word for it.

law-abiding group of concerned citizens.

Gabrielle Giffords is running face first into uncharted territory by
hiding from her constituents, outright lying about them, and calling them
racists. The pressure is causing her to make critical mistakes and reveal
just what she thinks about her constituents. It is time to up that pressure
now more than ever.

classic film... Hope to see you there! Thank you again for your support!
Sincerely yours, Gabrielle Giffords."

Gabrielle Giffords is hiding from her constituency at a time when she
needs to start listening to them. She showed true cowardice by failing to
appear at her own event in the face of public protest.

She did the exact same thing in Douglas, where she forced constituents to
wait in line to talk to her one-on-one before turning the rest away rather
than speak openly with her constituents

The reality is that there was no unruly mob, which was apparent to
everyone who attended. There were only concerned constituents who showed up
to the only public appearance she planned to make in Tucson during the
recess. And the only reason we were there was to ask her for one public

In fact, rather than disrupt the movie night, Tea Partiers helped the La
Placita Cinema set up their chairs!

By not showing up to her own event because of fears that her constituents
would "disrupt the movie", Giffords showed not only cowardice by failing to
defend her position on government-run healthcare, but disrespect and
disdain for her own constituency. Essentially, she is calling the
protesters uncivilized and not worth her time.

I also invite you all to check out the videos, pictures, and news coverage
of the event and judge for yourself if these people are part of an unruly
mob (posted below "Protest News"). I just don't see it where they get that
idea.

Several groups will be protesting outside of Giffords' office on Saturday,
August 8 at 9 a.m. Her office is located on the SW corner of Pima & Swan.
While this is not a Tucson Tea Party organized protest, I know that many of
our supporters will be there and feel that it is important for other Tea
Partiers to know about it.

The Tucson Tea Party will be participating in the Nationwide Recess Rally
in front of Giffords' office. While the nationwide rally will be at noon on
Saturday, August 22, we believe there are significant disadvantages to that
time including the heat, lack of traffic, no news media on hand, and nobody
present at Giffords' office.

Therefore, The Tucson Tea Party rally will take place on Friday, August 21
between 4 - 7 p.m. at Gabrielle Giffords' office on Pima and Swan! The last

it earlier today.

Prosperity is joining allied organizations to hold protests at the
offices of members of Arizona's Congressional delegation to tell them
to keep their HANDS OFF OUR HEALTH CARE!

Arizona, Smart Girl Politics, Tea Party Patriots, and thousands of
citizen activists in Code Blue protests around the state

Residents of Arizona's 8th District deserve more than Giffords so called "first step."

While I disagree with Representative Raul Grijalva on many issues I respect his honesty regarding the "pay-as-you-go" (PAYGO) proposal. The latest PAYGO scheme does not address the central issue of historic government overspending and is riddled with so many loopholes that it will have no serious effect on reducing the budget deficit.

I support responsible budgeting. The government should focus on funding essential programs while keeping spending in line with tax receipts. Representative Gabrielle Giffords voted for outrageous bailouts and the ineffective stimulus program. I would have voted no on these reckless expansions of government. Giffords is now using her support for PAYGO as a smoke screen to hide her true record of supporting rampant deficit spending. In fact Giffords has been touting PAYGO at least since October 2007, when she sent out a taxpayer funded mailer on the topic. But in a recent Arizona Daily Star story (Giffords, Grijalva differ on pay-as-you-go bill, July 23rd, 2009) Giffords called PAYGO "a first step." She has been trying to take that first step since 2007. Our nation does not have two more years for Rep. Giffords to learn how to walk the walk.

It is important for our economy and our future that the U.S. restore confidence in the dollar and the government's ability to pay its debts. For the first time in recent history the federal government's credit rating is at risk of being downgraded. That would drive up the government's cost of borrowing and increase inflation. Massive government borrowing also competes with and crowds out private borrowing. This increases the interest rate that businesses have to pay to expand and reduces economic growth.

I will work for responsible budgeting and vote against the dangerous over spending of the Obama Administration, and I won't take three years learning how to do it. I will start from day one after being sworn in, January 2011.

The Pima County Board of Supervisors will hold a July 28 public hearing on a proposed 4.35% primary property tax increase.

Unlike previous occasions in which the Tucson Tea Party has voiced opposition to tax increases, such as the Tucson City Council's proposed 2% renter's tax, this tax increase will affect ALL residents of Pima County!

It just doesn't make sense to raise property taxes on Pima County homeowners who have already been battered by crashing property values. Many people are barely making ends meet as it is -- they don't need to worry about higher tax bills on top of it!

We believe that the solution is for Pima County to balance its own budget by cutting where it can like the rest of us do.

Below you will find information about the Board of Supervisors planned public hearing.

Put 'stimulus' funds to better use

SPECIAL TO THE ARIZONA STAR

The Star editorialized Sunday against my criticism of the president's "stimulus bill" and my suggestion that the federal government stop spending the money after 2011 — and consider whether it could be put to better use.
When I first opposed the stimulus bill, I said it was a very costly and inefficient way to create jobs and get the economy going. Unfortunately, that's the way it's turning out.
In January, the president and his economic team assured the nation that the unemployment rate wouldn't rise beyond 8 percent if Congress quickly enacted his stimulus measure. He even proclaimed in an April 29 news conference that the stimulus bill has "already saved or created over 150,000 jobs."
But the fact is, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics — which is the government agency responsible for tracking unemployment rates — more than 3 million jobs have been lost this year, and unemployment reached a 25-year high of 9.4 percent in May.
The president acknowledges, "it's pretty clear now that unemployment will end up going over 10 percent."
Many economists also warned the president that government spending of such magnitude couldn't be used quickly enough to have an immediate impact on the economy, and now it's clear that most of the stimulus money hasn't even been put to use.
According to the White House Web site, recovery.gov, which tracks how the stimulus money is being spent, only 8.2 percent of the stimulus bill has reached the economy as of July 10. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office projects that more than half of the $1.2 trillion "stimulus" bill won't be spent until well after 2011.
I think every American would agree — and hope — that the recession will be over two years from now. If so, why should we keep spending stimulus money? Wouldn't it make more sense to see if, for example, there are more effective ways to get people back to work?
I offered several suggestions.
• The Highway Trust Fund is out of money (because it hasn't collected enough gas tax). Since building highways creates jobs, why not use some of the unspent stimulus money to fund it?
• Health care: the president's proposed plan is turning out to be way too costly. Could some of the money be used for jobs in health care?
• Finally, nothing says we have to spend the money. Since we have to borrow it in order to spend it, we could save $400 billion in interest costs alone; and, as I said, the private sector (especially small business) is much more efficient at creating jobs than the government. With the federal government not competing for the funds, it would free up capital for small business to borrow.
When we decide to spend $1.2 trillion, we should be open to evaluating whether it's working. I believe the time for that is now, rather than after we borrowed and spent the money.

We just finished our first quarter and are proud to announce that we exceeded our fundraising goal. We are not resting though and are planning even more great events this quarter.

Last Friday about 500 people protested outside Rep. Giffords' office. One of Tucson's top radio hosts made a YouTube video of the event and you can watch it right here.

Clearly the voters of District 8 are not comfortable with Rep. Giffords' vote in favor of the radical Cap and Trade energy control plan and are very concerned about how she might vote on President Obama's plan for a government takeover of health care.

I have clearly stated that I am against Cap and Trade. We need to develop all domestic sources of energy, traditional and alternative, in order to get the economy moving again and to become energy independent. Ronald Reagan said "this nation has been portrayed for too long a time to the people as being energy-poor when it is energy-rich." I agree with President Reagan.

I also support reforms to our health care system that increase consumer choice and reduce government regulations. The high cost of health care is caused in part by government interference in the market. I oppose a complete take over by the government because it will cost billions of dollars in new taxes and result in rationing.

This has been a busy month for the United States House of Representatives. Two controversial bills have been debated. One has passed the House and the other is still in committees. Both bills will change our country in negative ways, and give our government excessive control over each and every person’s life.

The American Clean Energy and Security Act passed by the House on June 26 will escalate all energy costs, as well as greatly harm businesses. Was this a wise vote by Rep. Raul Grijalva when people and businesses are already struggling financially and unemployment is heading towards10%?

The American Affordable Health Choices Act is now in House committees. This bill’s name is ironic because it will do the opposite for our healthcare system. This is because it will increase our medical costs and at the same time make one of the best healthcare systems in the world second-rate. The bill will limit medical research, dictate when and where you are to receive your medical care, and set into motion rationing of services. It will also hurt small businesses with the surtax.

Tonight in the House Energy & Commerce Committee markup of H.R. 3200, “The Affordable Health Care Choice Act of 2009,” Democrat lawmakers passionately argued against a simple amendment that would have prevented federal employees from “dictating how a medical provider practices medicine.”

Here is the actual text of the amendment they rejected:

“(k) Construction - Nothing in this section shall be construed to allow any federal employee or political appointee to dictate how a medical provider practices medicine.”

The amendment was defeated! You read correctly. The majority rejected this simple amendment!

If you want your doctor to be able to “practice medicine” without being told how to do so by a federal employee, I urge you to get involved in this debate NOW!

Discussing this with your friends, family, and your Member of Congress is not enough. It’s time to call your doctor!

President Obama has pledged not to raise taxes on middle-income Americans, but legislation he and congressional Democrats are backing would do just that.

On June 26, the House of Representatives passed legislation described by Harvard University economist Martin Feldstein as “a stealth strategy for a massive long-term tax increase.” All Americans, regardless of income, will feel the effects of this tax hike.

At a time when the economy remains shaky and unemployment has reached a 25-year high, Congress should not be considering new taxes. They would be bad for families and would slow the economic recovery as well. The Senate could take up the House legislation, known as the American Clean Energy and Security Act, though it may not do so until September. That would give all Americans time to register their opinions on the bill.

The bill would implement a “cap-and-trade” program with the ostensible purpose of reducing emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Cap-and-trade programs set strict, mandatory limits on carbon emissions from various sources (like electric utilities). Those sources would then either reduce carbon emissions or buy or trade emission allowances to achieve the required overall emissions reductions.

Rather than directly raising taxes on Americans, cap-and-trade raises the cost of living for everyone by raising energy costs and consumer prices for virtually everything. The effect is the same as if they had had their taxes raised. When the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office analyzed the cost of reducing carbon emissions by 15 percent below 2005 levels, it estimated a family’s cost of living would increase by $1,600 a year. “To put that $1,600 carbon tax in perspective, a typical family of four with earnings of $50,000 now pays an income tax of about $3,000,” Feldstein wrote recently in the Weekly Standard. “The tax imposed by the cap-and-trade system is therefore equivalent to raising the family’s income tax by about 50 percent.” That’s $1,600 that families won’t be able to spend or invest in the economy.

In addition to the tax increase, Americans would also feel the pinch because cap-and-trade will hurt economic growth. The Heritage Foundation concluded that it would slow long-term growth by almost $10 trillion over 26 years.

And jobs would be lost. The Heritage Foundation’s analysis found that Arizona would lose thousands of jobs, over 30,000 in the first year alone.

Proponents of the cap-and-trade proposal argue that job losses will be offset by the creation of new, “green” jobs. But it’s not certain those jobs will materialize, let alone make up for the jobs that are lost. In Spain, whose government has invested heavily in “green” jobs, two jobs are lost for every green job created, according to a Spanish economist.

This year won’t be the first time that the Senate has considered cap-and-trade. In 2008, similar legislation went down to defeat, and this year’s version will once again face opposition from Senate Republicans and some moderate Democrats. If Americans communicate their opinions about this bill to their representatives in Congress, I am convinced it can be defeated again.

Kyl Opening Statement at Sotomayor Hearing

“Many of Judge Sotomayor’s public statements suggest that she may, indeed, allow, and even embrace, decision-making based on her biases and prejudices”

WASHINGTON, D.C. –The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee today began confirmation hearings on Judge Sonia Sotomayor, who was nominated to serve as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. U.S. Senate Republican Whip Jon Kyl, a member of the Judiciary Committee, delivered the following opening statement:

“I would hope every American is proud that a Hispanic woman has been nominated to sit on the Supreme Court. In fulfilling our advise and consent role, of course, we must evaluate Judge Sotomayor’s fitness to serve on the merits, not on the basis of her ethnicity.

“With a background that creates a prima facie case for confirmation, the primary question I believe Judge Sotomayor must address in this hearing is her understanding of the role of an appellate judge. From what she has said, she appears to believe that her role is not constrained to objectively decide who wins based on the weight of the law, but who, in her opinion, should win. The factors that will influence her decisions apparently include her ‘gender and Latina heritage’ and foreign legal concepts that get her ‘creative juices going.’

“What is the traditional basis for judging in America? For 220 years, presidents and the Senate have focused on appointing and confirming judges and justices who are committed to putting aside their biases and prejudices and applying law to fairly and impartially resolve disputes between parties.

“This principle is universally recognized and shared by judges across the ideological spectrum. For instance, Judge Richard Paez of the Ninth Circuit – with whom I disagree on a number of issues –explained this in the same venue where, less than 24 hours earlier, Judge Sotomayor made her now-famous remarks about a ‘wise Latina woman’ making better decisions than other judges. Judge Paez described the instructions that he gave to jurors who were about to hear a case. ‘As jurors,’ he said, ‘recognize that you might have some bias, or prejudice. Recognize that it exists, and determine whether you can control it so that you can judge the case fairly. Because if you cannot—if you cannot set aside those prejudices, biases and passions—then you should not sit on the case.’

“And then Judge Paez said: ‘The same principle applies to judges. We take an oath of office. At the federal level, it is a very interesting oath. It says, in part, that you promise or swear to do justice to both the poor and the rich. The first time I heard this oath, I was startled by its significance. I have my oath hanging on the wall in the office to remind me of my obligations. And so, although I am a Latino judge and there is no question about that—I am viewed as a Latino judge—as I judge cases, I try to judge them fairly. I try to remain faithful to my oath.’

“What Judge Paez said has been the standard for 220 years—it correctly describes the fundamental and proper role for a judge.

“Unfortunately, a very important person has decided it is time for change—time for a new kind of judge; one who will apply a different standard of judging, including employment of his or her empathy for one of the parties to the dispute. That person is President Obama; and the question before us is whether his first nominee to the Supreme Court follows his new model of judging or the traditional model articulated by Judge Paez.

“President Obama, in opposing the nomination of Chief Justice Roberts, said that ‘while adherence to legal precedent and rules of statutory or constitutional construction will dispose of 95 percent of the cases that come before a court . . . —what matters on the Supreme Court is those 5 percent of cases that are truly difficult. . . . In those 5 percent of hard cases, the constitutional text will not be directly on point. The language of the statute will not be perfectly clear. Legal process alone will not lead you to a rule of decision.’

“How does President Obama propose judges deal with these hard cases? Does he want them to use judicial precedent, canons of construction, and other accepted tools of interpretation that judges have used for centuries? No, President Obama says that ‘in those difficult cases, the critical ingredient is supplied by what is in the judge’s heart.’

“Of course, every person should have empathy, and in certain situations, such as sentencing, it may not be wrong for judges to be empathetic. The problem arises when empathy and other biases or prejudices that are ‘in the judge’s heart’ become ‘the critical ingredient’ to deciding cases. As Judge Paez explained, a judge’s prejudices, biases, and passions should not be embraced—they must be ‘set aside’ so that a judge can render an impartial decision as required by the judicial oath and as parties before the court expect.

“I respectfully submit that President Obama is simply outside the mainstream in his statements about how judges should decide cases. I practiced law for almost 20 years before every level of state and federal court, including the U.S. Supreme Court, and never once did I hear a lawyer argue that he had no legal basis to sustain his client’s position, so that he had to ask the judge to go with his ‘gut’ or ‘heart.’ If judges routinely started ruling on the basis of their personal feelings, however well-intentioned, the entire legitimacy of the judicial system would be jeopardized.

“The question for this committee is whether Judge Sotomayor agrees with President Obama’s theory of judging or whether she will faithfully interpret the laws and Constitution and take seriously the oath of her prospective office.

“Many of Judge Sotomayor’s public statements suggest that she may, indeed, allow, and even embrace, decision-making based on her biases and prejudices.

“The ‘wise Latina woman’ quote, which I referred to earlier, suggests that Judge Sotomayor endorses the view that a judge should allow her gender-, ethnic-, and experience-based biases to guide her when rendering judicial opinions. This is in stark contrast to Judge Paez’s view that these factors should be ‘set aside.’

“In the same lecture, Judge Sotomayor posits that ‘there is no objective stance but only a series of perspectives—no neutrality, no escape from choice in judging’ and claims that ‘[t]he aspiration to impartiality is just that—it’s an aspiration because it denies the fact that we are by our experiences making different choices than others.’ No neutrality, no impartiality in judging? Yet, isn’t that what the judicial oath explicitly requires?

“And according to Judge Sotomayor, ‘Personal experiences affect the facts that judges choose to see. . . . I simply do not know exactly what that difference will be in my judging. But I accept there will be some based on my gender and my Latina heritage.’

“Judge Sotomayor clearly rejected the notion that judges should strive for an impartial brand of justice. She has already ‘accepted’ that her gender and Latina heritage will affect the outcome of her cases.

This is a serious issue, and it’s not the only indication that Judge Sotomayor has an expansive view of what a judge may appropriately consider. In a speech to the Puerto Rican ACLU, Judge Sotomayor endorsed the idea that American judges should use ‘good ideas’ found in foreign law so that America does not ‘lose influence in the world.’

“As I’ve explained on the floor of the Senate, the laws and practices of foreign nations are simply irrelevant to interpreting the will of the American people as expressed through our Constitution.

Additionally, the vast expanse of foreign judicial opinions and practices from which one might draw simply gives activist judges cover for promoting their personal preferences instead of the law. You can, therefore, understand my concern when I hear Judge Sotomayor say that unless judges take it upon themselves to borrow ideas from foreign jurisdictions, America is ‘going to lose influence in the world.’ That’s not a judge’s concern.

“Some people will suggest that we shouldn’t read too much into Judge Sotomayor’s speeches and articles—that the focus should instead be on her judicial decisions. I agree that her judicial record is an important component of our evaluation, and I look forward to hearing why, for instance, the Supreme Court has reversed or vacated 80 percent of her opinions that have reached that body, by a total vote count of 52 to 19.

“But we cannot simply brush aside her extrajudicial statements. Until now, Judge Sotomayor has been operating under the restraining influence of a higher authority—the Supreme Court. If confirmed, there will be no such restraint that would prevent her from—to paraphrase President Obama—deciding cases based on her heart-felt views. Before we can faithfully discharge our duty to advise and consent, we must be confident that Judge Sotomayor is absolutely committed to setting aside her biases and impartially deciding cases based upon the rule of law.”

History is full of people deciding to go against the odds. Ruth McClung, who is running for U.S. Congress in Arizona’s congressional district 7, is no exception. Ruth, a conservative Republican, has decided to run in a district that is a Democrat strong-hold. When asked about it, she stated, “I believe the people need another choice! The incumbent, Rep. Raul Grijalva, has one of the most liberal voting records in Congress, and does not represent the people.

Ruth McClung is not the average candidate. She is a 27 year old rocket scientist, with 7 years of technical and management experience. She is an avid outdoor enthusiast, and an amateur artist and writer. She received her Bachelor of Science in physics from the University of Arizona in 2004. She said as to why she was running, “My competition does not understand energy, the environment, technology, or national security and defense – these complex issues require science based solutions, not political rhetoric. I also want to defend the American Dream. I want to lead America back into prosperity and stop the reckless spending going on in Washington. I want to give freedom back to the people. It’s the people who have made this country great, not the politicians!” Ruth will represent the people of Southern Arizona, not the status quo in Washington.

Spring Training!

For those of you that don't know, Pima County is in potential jeopardy of losing our remaining Spring Training teams - the Diamondbacks and the Rockies. Did you realize that each Spring Training team pumps in approximately $10,000,000 through hotels, restaurants, rental cars, etc... money that enters our local economy and provides local jobs and businesses a much needed source of revenue? While yes, there is a tax included to cover the cost of the sports facility, that tax is offset every year by that $10,000,000 - $30,000,000 coming into our local economy.

Or think of it this way: You go out to eat, you spend $100 on a meal for you and a date... you pay an extra $0.25 on the bill. Meanwhile, Brad Hawpe of the Colorado Rockies comes into the same restaurant... sits down with 10 of his friends and family, and rings up a bill of $2000. That's $2000 dollars coming out of Colorado's economy, and being planted in ours, not to mention the $5.00 in tax he paid towards the ballpark. Now, think of all the fans that pour in over the course of a month. Ta Da! $10,000,000 that Pima County now has that it didn't have before.

The additional benefit to the new stadium? By locating it in the Marana area, you now give families with kids involved in baseball and softball a complex to use the rest of the year - one that is fully lit and high quality. Local traveling youth baseball now has a place within the Tucson area to hold tournaments - and 30 minutes closer to Phoenix! You give the NW side of Tucson a venue to host large scale concerts and events. Finally, by adding to an as-of-yet undeveloped area, you give businesses such as sports bars, restaurants, and hotels the chance to build new facilities within the immediate vicinity of the complex, making it easier for those visiting Spring Training to support our local business with their patronage.

Yes, agreeing to a tax in this economy can be frustrating. Trust me, as a Tea Partier, it's hard to come out and support an additional tax. However, it's as much about how the money is spent, as it is about how much is taken from us. This is not a $30,000 griffin along a glorified alleyway, nor is it a wall around an empty lot. This is not an $820,000 video to go into a building that is not built yet, nor anytime soon. This is real investment - investment in Marana, investment in Pima County, and Tucson as a whole.

July 4th Tea Party!

In between last night and this morning we have received a flood of emails from people who would like more information about the Independence Day Tea Party. Your best source of information is to visit our website , but I will lay out some basic information.

Location

Kennedy Park Fiesta Area is located at 3700 S La Cholla. The Fiesta Area is across the street from the park and lake. To get to the Fiesta Area head North on Ajo and make a right on La Cholla. Look for the signs and police officers who will be directing traffic.

Event Information

Gates open at 4 p.m.The carnival runs from 4 until 8 p.m. Wristbands for unlimited use of the jumping castles are $5 for the first child and $3 for siblings. Tickets for all of the carnival games are 4 for $1.

We ask that you please bring no alcohol into the park.

There will be lots of food for all types of palettes available for purchase at the event. We are excited as well that all of our vendors have held their prices to $5 or less for their food items. This should make feeding families much more affordable.

The Jadi Norris band will perform at 8 p.m. with fireworks following around 9 p.m.

Parking

There are four places that you can park. There is a very large parking lot connected to the Fiesta Area, a second upper parking lot above the Fiesta Area lot, you may park at the lake, and finally at the actual park itself there is also parking available. For your insured safety we will have Police Officers patroling these parking lots and directing traffic throughout the entire event. As with all events of this size it would be a good idea to carpool.

The U.S. Forest Service says it cannot stop development of the proposed Rosemont Copper mine in the Santa Rita Mountains, but Southern Arizona’s two representatives in Congress have asked the Secretary of Agriculture to overrule the agency’s interpretation of the law.

U.S. Reps. Gabrielle Giffords and Raul Grijalva, both Democrats, have sent a letter to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack asking him to “direct the Forest Service to remain open to the possibility that their analysis will result in a ‘no action’ recommendation.”

Under federal environmental law, a “no action” finding would block development of the mine.

On June 5, the Coronado National Forest posted a document on its website saying the agency could not legally prevent the Rosemont Mine from using forest land for copper mining operations.

Three days earlier, the Pima County Board approved an agreement with the Forest Service to participate in the deliberations on the proposed mine about 40 miles southeast of Tucson. In that agreement, the county said it disagrees with the Forest Service’s assertion that it can’t block the development of the mine.

Augusta Resource has proposed building a copper mine largely on private land it owns but with processing operations and waste storage on Forest Service land.

The Forest Service plans to make a final ruling by July 2010, and spokesman John Able said the process is intended to “ensure such plans minimize adverse environmental impact.”

Dr. Steven D. Knope M.D. is a board-certified internist and sports medicine expert. He completed his premedical studies at Columbia University and graduated with honors in internal medicine from Cornell University Medical College in 1988. He completed his residency training at UCLA, where he was awarded the first Sherman Melinkoff Teacher of the Year Award. He has served as Chief of Medicine, Chairman of the Department of Medicine, and Director of the ICU in the Carondelet system in Tucson, Arizona. He is a pioneer in the field of concierge medicine, opening one of the first concierge practices in America in December 2000. He authored the first book on concierge medicine entitled, Concierge Medicine; A New System to Get the Best Healthcare (Praeger, 2008).

Dr. Jane M. Orient, M.D. is a Clinical Lecturer in Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, and Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine. As well, she edits the Doctors for Disaster Preparedness Newsletter and Civil Defense Perspectives. In addition, she is the editor of AAPS News, the official newsletter of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons for which she serves as Executive Director. Her articles frequently appear in the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons.
Dr. Bennet E. Davis, M.D. is President of the Pima County Medical Society and board-certified in anesthesiology and pain medicine. He received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, trained in Orthopedic Surgery and Anesthesiology and practiced pain medicine at the University of California-Irvine. He is the former medical director of The University of Arizona Pain Management Center, and was an Associate Professor of clinical anesthesiology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. Dr. Davis is a member of the Arizona Cancer Center. He has special interests in pain associated with spinal conditions RSD and nerve injury.

Dr. Byron Schlomach is an economist and works as the Director of the Center for Economic Prosperity at the Goldwater Institute. He has 15 years of experience working in and around state government. He has researched and written on tax and spending policy in two states in addition to studying transportation, health care, and education policy. Byron’s writings have appeared in National Review Online, Business Week Online and numerous Texas and Arizona newspapers. He is a graduate of Texas A&M University.

Each guest will give an introduction of their topic followed by an hour of questions and answers with the panelists.

Choosing to be a Conservative came Naturally for me. I did have to Grow up and Mature alittle first. I wasn't Really into Politics for MOST of My Young Life. I Could Care Less Who the President was or what
Congress was doing. It didn't Mean Anything to me. I just Lived My Life without a Caring about How laws were being Passed everyday that Effected My Life and Everyone's Life Around mine too.
I Didn't Really involve Myself with Politics until After the Attack of the World Trade Towers in New York City on Sept. 11th of 2001. I was Shocked and Horrified as were Most Americans on that day. It was a Rude Awakening to Say The Least. That Day Changed My Life Forever. My Life has Never Been the Same Since.
I Was Impressed and Thankful to how President Bush and New York City's Mayor Rudolph Giuliani Handled Everything in the Aftermath of it all. I Became Much More Motivated to make Sure the Right Leader was Leading & DEFENDING Our Country to the VERY BEST of their Ability. Years went by and I saw Bush keeping America Safe. The Bush Administration Vowed to Stay on Offense to those Who Still Wanted to Harm Americans instead of sitting back waiting for another Terrorist attack. Just watching Bush Working Hard and doing HIS BEST to Keep America Safe Convinced ME to Think that Bush was a Very Brave Man.
I was Proud to give him another Four Years to Keep America Safe and Stay on Offense. I thought he was doing the Right Thing Protecting and Defending America. That is ANY President's NUMBER ONE PRIORITY!! Presidents are COMMANDER IN CHIEF!! Presidents are in charge of America's Military. The Best, Most Powerful and Dangerous Military in the Whole World. A United States President's Authority and Influence in the World IS something NOT to be taken lightly. An American President is THE MOST POWERFUL PERSON IN THE WORLD!!
It was during Bush's Campaign for Re-Election Against John Kerry that I really got involved and Wanted Bush to Succeed. I Mostly wanted Bush to Succeed for the reasons I already listed above. I also Liked Bush's Personality and the way he Carried himself. I still liked his Bravery and Courage to Stand up and Fight against Terrorists who Still Hate us and Want to Harm America. That was Important to ME. I thought it was Great that We Found Saddam in a Rat Hole and turned him over to the Iraqi People for Justice. That IS What He Got and That IS What He Deserved.
I Will be Honest with You about another reason why I voted to Re-Elect Bush for a Second Term. I Could NOT Stand John Kerry. I couldn't Find ONE Good Reason to Vote for him. I Couldn't find ONE Good Quality about him that I Liked or Admired or even Personally Connected to AT ALL. NOT EVEN ONE!! So that was just one other reason to Vote for Bush as far as I was concerned. A Vote For Bush was a Vote AGAINST KERRY.
This probably doesn't sound NEW or Different to People Who have been following Politics or have been Politically Involved for A LOT Longer than Me but this is My Note about "Why I Choose to be a Conservative". This is My Story and this is how I really came about following Politics and becoming More and More Politically Involved.
Now I Know by now Some Must be Reading this and thinking to themselves, Why does he keep going on and on talking about Bush for? President Bush was NOT a Strong Conservative Leader. Bush was Far From it but Bush did have a Few Conservative Principles he Held onto. Strong National Defense, ProLife, ProFamily, ProMarriage, Christian, and maybe a few More if he was LUCKY! But it wasn't Bush ALONE that Convinced ME to Consider MYSELF a Conservative.
It was also during Bush's Re-Election Run that I had Extra Time to Listen to Conservative Talk Radio for the first time in My Life! I DID Relate to Talk Radio and CONNECT with some of Talk Show Hosts I heard on the Radio.
Sean Hannity was the First Talk Radio Personality I heard and is STILL to this day My Absolute Favorite Guy on ALL THINGS POLITICAL that I Like and find Myself Agreeing with MOST of the Time. After Listening to Sean for awhile, I found myself wanting to hear what other Talk Radio Personalities were saying. That Search Led me to Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, Mark Levin, Micheal Savage, Dennis Miller, Gordon Liddy, and Glenn Beck. I didn't really Bond with Michael Savage or Rush Limbaugh. I Don't DisAgree with them on Substance. I just couldn't handle their Talk Show Personalities. I Still do listen to the rest of the others like Laura Ingraham, Mark Levin, Gordon Liddy, Dennis Miller, and Glenn Beck. After Consistanting Listening to Conservatitive Talk Radio almost Daily for at least SIX YEARS NOW. It IS Safe to say that I am HOOKED and a Political Junkie at this Point. I Could NOT Argue with You about that. It is Totally TRUE! My Wife Hates it but that's just is the way it IS NOW!
It is like My EYES have been OPENED Politically and I HAVE Seen The LIGHT when it comes to what side I am on Politcially. It was a NO BRAINER for me to see I NOW LEAN TO THE FAR RIGHT!

"Global Warming" aka "Climate Change" is NOT a PROVEN FACT and there is NO CONSENSUS of Scientists Who Truly can Prove it!
As a Side Note, I Also Favor ANY Poitician Who Supports Enacting the Fair Tax! I Do Believe that We NO Longer Want or Need the IRS! The IRS SHOULD be Shut Down and Never Brought back into Power EVER Again! A Fair Tax, to ME, Seems to be a MORE FAIR Way of Handling the Taxes the American Government Needs from it's Citizens!

So, by popular demand (which means I got two requests) I thought I would introduce myself.

My name is Peter Schmugge. I am 33, married, and live out near the Silverbell Mtns. I have one daughter - 5 years old, two dogs, one rabbit, and one tortoise.

I own my own landscape maintenance company, formed it right before the housing bubble burst, and right now just happy to put food on the table and pay the bills.

Politically, I would loosely describe myself as a Libertarian. I do have problems with the Libertarian stand on abortion and drug use... So for many, many years, I have considered myself an Independant Conservative. I always voted Republican during elections, because only the Republican party protects my rights to be a closet Libertarian / IC. Also, the slide to the center / middle worried me - I did not want to be a part of a party that was headed in that direction. Recently, I realized that the Party was becoming centrist because Independent Conservatives like me weren't working within the Party to keep it conservative. So here I am, trying to be a part of the solution, rather than a part of the problem.

Hope to hear from others, and hope to learn more about the other Independent Conservatives within Pima's LD 25!!
